Leswalt

leswalt

Leswalt is an odd name with unsure origins. Possible derivations for it's name include 'llys gwellt' (Welsh) meaning 'grass court' or perhaps 'lios uillt' (Gaelic) meaning 'fort of the glen' - referring to Lochnaw Castle. The historical feature of Leswalt is the old kirk. This ruined mediaeval church holds a carved stone dated 1644 which is illustrated with the coats of arms of Sir Patrick Agnew and Margeret Kennedy - a marriage between two powerful families in the area. By the gates of the church is a burial enclosure for the Agnew family dating from the 18th century. When the new church was built in 1827, the old kirk became a school
